Meet MDGOP Comptroller

James Appel

James Appel is the Comptroller for the Maryland Republican Party. His responsibilities include managing all accounting and HR for the state party and ensuring the party stays in compliance with state and federal campaign finance laws.

James joined the MDGOP Staff in 2017 bringing a wealth of campaign finance experience with him. He has been treasurer or comptroller for Governor Hogan, Lt. Gov. Rutherford, Anne Arundel County GOP, the Senate Caucus Committee and many candidates.

James also serves as the Chairman of the Anne Arundel County Republican Central Committee. He has previously served as the Executive Financial Officer at the Maryland Department of Information Technology, Chief Financial Officer at a program at NOAA, and has owned several small businesses. He is also our resident sailing and tennis expert.
